James Montgomery (1771 - 1854) was a British editor and poet.

Montgomery, poet, boy of the pastor & missionary of a Moravian Brethren, was natural at Irvine, Ayrshire, & enlightened at the Moravian School at Fulneck, touching Leeds. Fallowing various changes of occupation & abode, he settled witharound Sheffield in 1792 as clerk to a newspaper. Around 1796 he had get editor of the Sheffield Iris, and was twice confined for political articles for which he was held responsible. Within 1797 he published Prison Amusements; but his 1st act to attract notice was The Wanderer of Switzerland (1806). It was followed by The West Indies (1809), The World before the Flood (1812), Greenland (1819), and The Pelican Island (1828), all of which contain passages of considerable inventive & descriptive power, however are lacking within nature & severity and fire. He himself required that his title would survive, around case the least bit, in his anthem, & in that his judgment has proved admittedly. A few one, like For ever with the Lord, ''Hail to the Lord's Anointed, and Prayer is the Soul's sincere Desire'', are sung wherever a English language is spoken. Montgomery was a good & beneficent human, the opponent of each form of injustice & oppression, & a friend of each movement for the welfare of the race. His virtues attained wide recognition.
